I grew up in the 1960's and 1970's and I had older brothers and sisters. We lived in the suburbs of L.A. so we watched the "Watts riots" on TV but there was definitely a "counter-culture" in even my neighborhood too. So just hanging out with the neighborhood kids in that atmosphere led to a pretty un-sheltered upbringing no matter how hard our parents tried.

to say the least...I never even new gay people existed until college. I had a guy jokingly tell me in high school that he was going to give me "a pearl necklace." I was excited, because I had never receive jewelry from a guy before (that was until I found out what that truly meant). When I was really young..I thought all black people were related! I thought all people went to church, because my parents had me at one eveytime the doors were open. God how nieve I was! I look back and laugh about it now, but to be honest with the world how it is, I'm pretty glad I was that sheltered. It probably saved me from a lot of mischief and trouble!

I sure did...and I think it was because I lived in a really big major city in the US. But believe me I still learned about the world...through magazines, books, school, radio, T.V and newspapers. Sometimes parents want to shelter their children for good reason--however those children are going to grow up not knowing how to handle the world and the cruelties that are out there. However it is all about maturity as well, I was very mature in my outlook on life which help me catipult my way into the world (because I wasn't scared to experience and learn outside the box that my parents trapped me into).

Yes - I lived in a Jewish community until I was 18 and went to a Jewish school until I was 13. It was only when I went to a secular high school that I started to mix with people outside the community- thank goodness I did

maybe a little bit, but in a good way. i think my parents sheltered me just enough to keep bad things from happening to me, while still giving me my independence and breathing room.

I was exposed to things in the right time, I think. Maybe a little early for some things, but for the most part my parents did me right.

No, I did not. My upbringing was frightening, horrible and I never knew what to expect. (Both my parents were untreated bipolar individuals)

Yes, unfortunately. It was out of love though so it's hard to complain.
