Yes, in todays modern society we've come to embrace those two subjects, were not back in the civil war, and honestly in my opinion its about darn time it starts changing. Maybe people will see things in a new light.

Great question...and one that I've discussed with many over the past few months.

As I see it, there needs to be a major change in the leadership of the country. The Democrats are the only viable change. So I think it may well be a tad irresponsible for them to propose such radical choices for this election. I realize I am not being too politically correct at the moment...but to heck with that. I have nothing against Obama or Clinton, and in fact, think that Obama may just be a great choice. But if America is not ready yet for a Black or Female leader, the Dems may just be throwing their chances away. And this is far too important a time to be throwing away chances...

I agree with most of the other answers. We are in the 21st century now, and we have a very diverse country. I think it's great that the Democratic Party has a woman, a black man, a Latino man and a white man as the four front-runners. It's very representative of all Americans. Of course only one will be the candidate, and that will be decided in the primary process. So it doesn't matter how many people are running--in both parties--because we will end up with one candidate for each party, and then we can all vote. Hopefully, voters will listen carefully to all the candidates, examine the issues, and vote for the person who best represents their views. It shouldn't matter what party they're in, what color or gender they are, who they're married to or other extraneous stuff--just if they're qualified and if they speak to your issues.

Have you ever heard the poem "the hand that rocks the cradle is the hand the rules the world"? I do not think that it matters if the person is a women or African American as long as they are smart enough to get the job done. This has nothing to do with my political views on the candidates at the moment but we cannot choose just on race or gender.

I think this "age" is the perfect time for it, in fact the timing couldn't be better. There are so many people disturbed by the actions of George Bush and his Administration - its seems there's some new outrage very other day - that they are ready for what they see as the polar opposite of him. Whether Hillary is a polar opposite is debatable - she's a moderate and a cautious hawk. But she differs greatly from him as far as what course to take toward terrorism and the war in Iraq. She also differs greatly from him on domestic issues. Obama is appealing to those who are so disillusioned with the typical politician that he seems a badly needed breath of fresh air. Put these two together on a ticket and they'd be unbeatable.

It seems almost immaterial at this point which candidate the Democrats put up for the nomination. Clinton, Obama, Edwards (hopefully not) - they all are almost assured of winning the election. McCain doesn't stand a chance. He's too old and he's alienated too many of his own party, and worst of all he stands with Bush on his Iraq policies - the kiss of death. Romney's a flip-flopping joke whose picture could be next to "opportunist" in the dictionary. Guiliani will be hard pressed to rise above his sordid private life and his liberal stand on social issues.

It's neither good nor bad. That's the difference between the two parties. The Democrats care about the ideas of the candidate, and character. The Republicans are misogynistic and racist in general; they couldn't have a black or female candidate because instead of being bad at ideas and willing to listen like the Democrats, they believe in the religious infallibility of their "leader"--the only one allowed to think for all the rest. So they couldn't have a black candidate or a female at all. Not so long as they are controlled by the sick ideas of a puritanic extremist minoritywith unAmerican ideas will they ever have such candidates.

I am a Democrat and I understand what you mean... based on the movement of ppl being more prejudiced and bigoted; but, I believe we have to stand up for the best candidate. If that means a woman or a black person then so be it.

We must do this because we are Democrats... because we are the party of equality and fairness for all...

I'm a republican who would pretty much vote for whoever the dems would put up ( except hillery, I draw the line there, I'd just stay home) this next time around in the hope they will undo what Bush has screwed up ( I don't accept him as philisophically a republican, he is a psudo-bible thumping reactionary). But I do bellieve that there are enough people out there who won't vote for a woman, yet that it would cost her some. I also believe there are enough out there that won't vote for a black that it would cost him. I think either would be a boon to a strong front runner as a vp, but I think that the worst possible ticket would include them both.
If I had a choice, I'd take Obama over Hillery ( while he has no record, at least he doens't have a negative record.) But I would rather see him as vp for someone stronger. If you guys put Gore up. I'll vote a straight dem ticket, Deal?

Actually,I think it's about time for both sides to have viable candidates of all races and both sexes.
I also think that the Independents should be allowed a place at the table.

There needs to be real campaign finance reform. It shouldn't cost 500 million dollars for a person to be elected President.

We should be encouraging the best and brightest on all sides, and not hindering them.

For practical reasons no. I knew a guy who said once to me,"I'll never vote for a Republican because they stole land from the white and gave it to the blacks after the civil war"

Needless to say I was appauled. He's on my list of one of the worse people in the world, but thats because he took a bribe while working for the government.

I guess with those choices, people like him might change their mind. White supremicist vote is still a potent force, but people don't want to talk about it. If you doubt me, remember what Y!A was like before the crackdown.
