I really would like to work in politics and I would rather not practice law. I am just about to finish a degree in political science and am considering joint degree programs that allow you to get your J.D and MPP in 4 years, shaving a year off. Is this a good idea? What options are there for degrees like this?

You could teach, work on campaigns or just work for the state or federal governments...

I'm going to be starting an MPP program next year. I can tell you that finding political jobs can be tough when you only have a BA (I've been working in politics for two years) and probably every extra bit of schooling would make you more attractive to employers inside the beltway. Every little bit helps. Of course that's a lot of time and money and you may be able to do well with only one of the two degrees. (Also I got into the London School of Economics which has 1 year masters programs.)

Good luck and thank you for being involved...

That would qualify you to manage a Taco Bell, not much more.
Politics is about 3 things - connections, connections and connections. Degrees are meaningless, in fact they can hurt you.
Got connections? Great, you may get work.
If not, stay in the private sector where the $$$ is.

Join a political party and be an active member so that you could be nominated as candidate of the party and become a full time politician. You must know how to use the proper strategy and tactics.

I got my JD at Chapel Hill and I had one freind who was getting the combination you mention. I can't swear it was all there, but if it wasn't it was in co-operation with Duke, just ten miles down the road. Two great schools, I would highly recommend checkin them out.

Forgive me, I misread your quesiton, I thought it said "where"

If you cannot find a job with those credentials and if you have to take a dump and find you have to toilet paper, well, you know what you can use.
