As a frequent traveler to Sydney, as well as other parts of the world, I would give the trains an above average score for entertainment value, but a bit below average for convenience, timeliness, and cleanliness. The people on the trains make up for the inconvenience. On any given train you are likely to see businessmen, tourists, local toughs, graffitti artists, ladies of the night, kids skipping school, shopkeepers, shopers, lovers in arms, and lovers in spats. The locals frequently will greet you, occassionally try to score a cigarette or some change, and sometimes even your billfold. It is fun to watch the kids try to cheat the system by riding without passes, and to watch the police try to control them.
Buses seem to be equally unreliable, time wise, but full of kids and moms, shoppers, and people who appear homeless. Again, some entertainment value. As for value, the last time I used the rails in Sydney, it was still a bargain. Probably the most underrated component of the transport system in Sydney is the ferry service. It is generally on time, leisurely, but reliable, and offers a view of the city that is spectacular. Personally, I would recommend the trip to Manly by ferry as a must do for anyone visiting Sydney. Surprisingly, I have met several Sydneysiders who have neverr done the ferry. They should give it a go, too!

Public transport in the main in Sydney is fair to good. I used it every day for years to get to work and had few problems. The trains are not dirty, they are clean at the start of the day and are cleaned where possible during the day. They can be messy but that is the fault of the passengers not the railway staff. Buses are frequent in some areas, less so in others. Some parts, particularly the northwest, are poorly served by public transport but most people have access to it.

There is the usual jumping up and down and pointing fingers at the moment because there is a State election on. It won't make any difference. There was an unfortunate breakdown of a train on the Harbour Bridge a day or two ago which caused chaos but that was one of those things. It is a rare occurrence fot such things to happen.

During the Olympic games, millions of people were carried all over the city quickly and efficiently by public transport.

By the way, it is called "transport" in Australia. "Transportation" was the sentence given to convicts when sent here in the early days.

We have big gaps in our public transport (large areas of Sydney are unservicable by transport) and we also have a lack of quality roads to support these gaps hence creating mega traffic problems often.

Trains are a joke they are very unreliable always late, dirty and breaking down just the other day during peak-time a large portion of the train system came to a halt because one train broke down. People were trapped in trains behind the broken one for 3 plus hours and delays went well into the night.

Buses are overcrowded and often dont stop because they are too full leaving some waiting a very long time to get on a bus.

Ferries service some harbour suburbs they always crash into things and have accidents.

It is really just a joke and falling appart..... I chose to drive everywhere (which isnt much better anyhow). I also would not catch Public transport in Sydney at night or outside of peak hours (when I used to I saw alot of things) and it is not very safe.

Most Sydneysiders would agree.

Cant wait for the state election next weekend....

Sydney transport is a joke - very good at getting people into the city for the most part (though peak hour is still horrific) - but getting around is terrible. However, compared to Vietnam, Cambodia, or other countries I've travelled, it's luxury! just choose the new buses with air -con in summer

Our rail network is one of the most compex in the world (City Rail) and you coould find it extremely difficult in finding out how you could get from say, the CBD to Campbelltown as you'd need to switch several trains.

As far as road traffic goes, its not that different than transport youu would find in New York, our bus services in the southern suburbs is going through a big change right now, but nothing much to worry you, exccept for some of the prices they charge these days.

In short, Sydney traffic is fair. Not recommended if you can have your own car however.

you will locate that basically the main important cities have good public transport (a number of them besides). people in close by components might tend to stick to their vehicles as quickly as moving to the city while you evaluate that's what they have constantly finished (i understand this using fact it is what I did for my first few years interior the city). i will admit that public transport in Brisbane is definitely a stable thank you to get around. regrettably in case you have a job and can't get a concession card it rather is a entire scam. i does no longer concepts the fee plenty if the buses actual grew to become up whilst they have been meant to. I walk now, it takes an hour for me to get to artwork, yet i've got lost weight and it is way less stressful then getting to a bus end 10 min early and sitting there for 40 minutes getting further and extra PO'd via the 2nd.
