To avoid hand movement distraction. Hands behind a back, even if they move, u still couldn't see them.
Imagine if all of them standing, holding a ball in each hand infront of their bodies & their hands keep moving ? It will definetly distract the players.

Perhaps the reasons are . Many of the most senior officials and administrators of the game are ex-military men who object to people standing with their hands in there pockets or scotching their nose. The other reason is that if someones hands are waving around on the court it can distract a player. So to prevent this happening put hands behind back . Also standing with feet slightly apart and hands behind the back is not uncomfortable and spreads the weight of the body evenly and makes it possible to stay alert. As the saying goes in tennis we need lerts

I am a ball boy for pro tennis matches at my club in Houston. We keep our hands behind our backs so if we have balls in our hands it does not distract the players. It also looks good on TV

Just because they do not want their arm movements to distract the players. They are also able to make the switch to their throwing hand by transferring the ball easier with their hands behind their backs. Tennis players ate fairly temperamental about movement on the court the linesman stay pretty stationary also and you always here the umpire making an announcement to the fans behind the baseline to find their seats .

You have to stand like that to avoid from being a distraction, and you have to be able to move out of the way if you see a ball coming your way.
It is really boring, and you feet really hurt after doing it for 10 hours in one day.

I always thought it was so they wouldn't drop the ball/s they were holding... or so that the tennis players wouldn't be distracted or confused by seeing more than one ball?
For when they are waiting for the towel... I guess its just polite?

well, if a player saw 2 balls on the court, he/she may get distracted by the second ball, looking at it. When they are looking at that ball, the other player will have the oppurtunity to hit the ball past them.
