Why can't we just get along?

We can. We can do anything we want if we put our minds to it.

Two things are needed for that.
A change at the personal level. We can't have a peaceful world if each one of us is full of prejudices, superstitions, hate and resentment. We need to acquire therefore moral virtues and put them to the service of mankind.
A change in the whole structure of the society. The whole destiny of humanity can not depend on the wishes or the decision of just one person. Easy?

Every living creature is out to fulfill their own "needs". Every human is selfish. I don't care how much "good" you have done for others you have only done it for yourself. People do good things to either have people like them more or so the person doing the good thing thinks that they are doing a good thing. Everyone has their own opinion on what's the right thing to do. Not everyone has the same opinion on what is the right thing to do.

Opposition is neccessary for our existence. We need both the gravitational force pushing down on us, and the electromagnetic force of matter pushing back in order to walk on the Earth. Conflict is neccessary for us to make progress. It is the medium of our existence.
