Hmmm..... I heard something similar to what you described in a movie on youtube. It was called something like "Phantom and V, the movie." It had a woman singing. I reccomend checking it out to see if that is the one.

it might be called(Excalibur theme) im not quite sure who sings it but look on limewire.i have that song but it's by someone/group called bassic.
i also have the phantom of the opera theme song in a techno trance remix...i can give u both to c if u recognise them..whats ur email?

the artist is andrew lloyd weber....you might want to try the song 'jacob and sons' from 'joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat' (also by andrew lloyd weber) - it's got a similar sound in the instruments, however it's not nearly as haunting as phantom of the opera.
