2. elocution (style or manner of speaking or reading in public)
3. effete (no longer capable of producing; worn out; exhausted; spent)
4. elude (to escape detection by; evade; baffle)
5. elegant (characterized by dignified richness and grace)

I enjoy reading Conrad, and while his English is probably flawless, I would not use the adjective "elegant."
