Really it's because 100's of years ago they prolly did, but as the French came into England in 1066 (?) and occupied for several hundred years and that the native languages: Welsh, Celtic, and something else I can't remember along with Latin all had words they spelled and pronounced differently. Then as the British came to the US and ran into Native Americans, Dutch and Spanish things got worse, not to mention African languages from slaves. Then add the fact that more time has lapsed for dialects to change and more immigrants etc. It is evolutionary.
It sure would have made school a lot easier. I could never spell worth a crap and prolly could have avoided getting slapped around by the nuns when I was a kid.

Oh my goodness! I have this thing with people who cant spell correctly... I have the tendancy to correct it RIGHT AWAY before going on with my conversation.
Words arent spelled hw they sound cause thats just the way it is. We arent first graders dude! We spell it the way we should cause thats in the dictionary and yeah thats it I guess!
I dont know if theres an answer to that, hmmm...
