Fill the washer up with water and add a little bleach, let it mix a little then add your jeans

I have used two ways:

1) Put in laundry machine, on hot, with lots of bleach. Chlorine bleach of course, not the colour-safe or peroxide kind. Let it sit there for awhile in the hot bleach-water (make sure the bleach and water are well-mixed!) before turning the machine on. Then stop and repeat the cycle several times without letting the bleach-water drain. The colour in jeans is pretty tough! But this works well and makes a natural-looking fade.

2) From Wal-Mart, in the laundry section, there's a rack with Rit fabric dyes. There is also colour-remover to use before dying! This fades jeans REALLY well, but the colour fades less in the seams (or just gets stuck in the seams), so the seams will be darker unless you're really careful. I generally think this looks cool anyways... Also repeat the cycle several times for this one, but there are instructions in the package insert explaining this! You'll want to buy at least four packages (they're only like $2 each!) because you need two packages/load and the water gets so full of dye that it's best to drain it after a few cycles, then re-fill with fresh water and remover.

You can use a combination of those two, but not at the same time! Dye remover is better if you want REALLY light jeans, bleach if you want a subtle fading effect.

A washing machine, and water with lots of chlorine bleach! Do NOT put the bleach directly on the jeans, but in the water. Give them a half-dozen washings, dry them between each one, and you'll definitely see a fade.

Well designer companies use bleach to fade, but thats quite hard for a common man, but still it could work.
Otherwise hire a graffiti artist to do it, they are quite talented people.

wash them alot. Sit them outside in the sun for a long time. Or you could have an experiment and soak them in lemon juice and peroxide. Maybe some really watered down bleach.

Scratch it with a coin to get the rugged faded design and you can control how faded you want it to be ^^,

I soak them in a solution of bleach and water for 20 mins and then dry them in sun.

Wash in hot water, without detergent, and let dry in the sun. Good luck!
