Don't be such a coward, darling.
Come on! If Philippines is that bad then there will be no single tourist roaming around the Philippines nowadays.
Just go to those islands or those well known tourist places. (Boracay, Palawan (Amanpulo/ El Nido), Bantayan, Malapascua Islands & so much more)
You will find more interesting place to go.
I recommend the lonely planet (Philippines) as your guide book or hire a travel agent but for sure you will meet friends who will be happy to answer some of your Q. Good luck! (--,)

The Philippines is not for everyone. Some foreigners consider the Philippines as paradise despite the problems around and unfortunately others are just not into the 3rd world thing (beggars, dirt and poverty, does Claire Danes ring a bell?). People come to the Philippines for the beaches and diving spots. Weather can also be a factor since it is warm and humid most of the time.

Travel nightmares? It was unfortunate that they had a bad experience in the Philippines but it does not mean you will suffer the same experience unless you do the same thing that they have done? That is why there are travel forums for people to exchange ideas and tips to avoid these common tourist pit falls.

I hope you can explain more about your girlfriends family and from which Province or City they are located. If her family is like a leech or something, probably you have all the reasons not to go to the Philippines.

your gf family was to over-reacting,,,,,, maybe because they appreciate much nature in here. To all the things you know is a complete opposite of what you think. Right now I'm enjoying in here, especially when you went in the Boracay in summer. I n Davao, where I live, has many great tourist spots, especially Mt. Apo (the tallest mountain in the Philippines), it would be fun if you go to Eden, Paradise and etc. Visit www.wowphilippines.com.ph

You will find the Philippines to be an eye opener.
The shopping itself is an experience you will remember for a long time.
The vast majority of people you will meet are friendly.
The scenery will vary from two extremes-beautiful to outright ugly.
If you like the night life you will find it impossible to be bored.
The food is good and cheap.
Transport can be a hassle.
You need to include a lot more details if you require more precise answers.
Enjoy your trip and make the most of it.

You will enjoy your stay here if you are a NATURE LOVER. There are lots of scenic spots here. I, myself, simply travelled by using the internet and hoping that someday, I'll go around the Philippines.
So, what are you waiting for? Come to the Philippines, our beautiful country. If you want someone to guide you, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me and I will try to make some adjustments with my work schedules just to make sure that you will enjoy your first stay here.
Have a nice day and GOD BLESS US ALL.

the philippines is very diverse when it comes to culture and natural tourist spots. you could go to bohol and go see the chocolate hills, or to leyte and ride across the san juanico bridge - connecting 2 separate islands. in davao, there are lots of tarsiers - the smallest monkeys in the world. mactan is also full of history - it's where the great ferdinand magellan encountered his tragic death. there's also the maria cristina falls in iligan, which is so massive that it supplies most of the electricity in the mindanao region. you could go whitewater rafting in cagayan de oro, or surfing in siargao. palawan is also a place you'd want to visit..lots of coral reefs, and you could go scuba diving. there are endless possibilities actually, as to where you would choose to go. don't let those rumors scare you...they're present in every country in the world, not only in the philippines.

well good luck!

your friends are just in a grumpy mood , probably because they didn't have good communication with the locals.
You will like it there. After the wedding , you may want to take a break at Illocos Norte or Puerto Princessa they are great tourist attractions.

if you recognize sincere hospitality then be a good guest and take it from there. enjoy the beach, sand and sun and the quiet pace. if you can make it to the islands, there's bohol (panglao), boracay or nido in palawan to name some because there are a million surprises awaiting the open-minded traveler
