All newborn babies just sleep and eat. They hardly spend anytime at all on looking around as they cant focus on any than their mothers faces. As they get older they focus on different things. There appears to be differing opinions as to overstimulation with toys and room decoration.
Most new parents supply an over abundance of toys etc for their new baby in trying to do the right thing.
Remember as a mother in law that you might need to back off when it comes to too many helpful suggestions about the baby.
This child will develop in its own way and at its own pace Im sure... so stop worrying and look forward to being a grandmother.
Good luck.

Newborn infants only respond to very big, bright visual objects. Color vision and depth perception, for example, take months to mature. If the newborn human brain is not equipped to see well, the implication is that newborns will not be sensitive to blur and will not focus their eyes clearly on an object. This results in a blurred image forming on the retina at the back of the eye, and only blurred signals being sent to the baby's developing visual system.so yes he will be calm and look around to explore

Not for a few months. A brand new baby can only see about a foot away from them. Just enough to make out moms face while nursing. Of course as the baby gets older the vision improves and the colorfulness may be a wonderful thing for baby to discover.

Too much and too colorful stuff can distract and over-stimulate the baby. For calmer baby it is wise to use just one bright and colored object at a time. The new object (wall application, crib toy or mobile) can be introduced later. Babies do need visual stimulation, but it is good to differentiate stimulation and distraction.

I've heard that different colors cause certain reactions. Like red. Red is supposed to energize you. Earth tones (tan, brown, green, etc) are supposed to calm you. Toys are ok, but I think the room itself (paint, curtains, and whatnot) should be kept plain. Bright colors may make it harder for the baby to fall asleep.

well i have a friend and her baby girls room was so colorful and bright, the baby was always "wired" it seemed like and refused to sleep, the dr actually told her to change the bedding to a plain sheet, no bright colors, and it helped

if there is too much going on the baby can get over stimulated and be fussy. Newborns can't see color well so they like contrast, red, white, and black.
