Find chinese characters hard to remember, could barely understand an article written in the newspapers. Can someone help me to improve? Are there any books available that list the more commonly used words in Chinese language. Wish to remember about 500~1000 of them for a start. Reading the dictionary can be quite boring at times and frankly, most explaination in those chinese dictionaries are more difficult than the actual character you've looking up for.

Well, the best way is not found in a books, its at www. zhongwen. com where you will also found the most common words used in increments of 500 words per batch. Other then that start using chinese online everyday in chat sites, sina.com or download QQ
