I want to convert my itunes songs to MP3 format (I didn't know that they weren't until recently), but I want to know will it take up space? Someone told me that MP3's are bigger than MP4's but MP3 is a better format.

I want to do this because I'm learning how to DJ and the program I'm going to be using only uses MP3 format.

The files you download from iTunes are in a format called Advanced Audio Codec, or AAC. Because you will be using these files as the source for your MP3, your audio quality will not improve, no matter how high you set the quality on the MP3 software. And each AAC and MP3 file will be roughly the same size if you use the same bit rate for each.

I don't recommend converting the songs, unless you have a specific reason for doing so, such as you want to put songs you purchased on iTunes onto an MP3 player other than an iPod.

AAC (used by itunes) is far more efficient than MP3.
So, for the same bit rate, an AAC file will have better quality, however, at the same bitrate an MP3 and an MP4 file will be about the same.

Both are about the same size if you're converting them in audio format. It wont take much of your space.

But if you're looking for better quality, AVV (itunes) has it all. Have fun...
