Sacramento was at the western end of the pony express route that traveled both ways to and from between Sacramento and St Joseph Mo.
As to significance. The Pony Express turned out to be relatively insignificant and a financial disaster for it financiers.
It only lasted for slightly more than a year: it was terribly expensive for the common citizen( $5.00/ 1/2 oz. ) and the winter runs took nearly 3 weeks to complete. It was largely preempted by the telegraph and the onset of the Civil War.
