After my daughter was born and administered the usual testing procedures, she stayed awake for several hours when newborn babies should've been sleeping. During that time she looked around at the people inside the room, and her eyes appeared very focused and alert. Is this normal behavior for a newborn?

Yes, it happens. Most often newborns are very sleepy from the birth exerience and or medications taken by mom during delivery.

Some babys are more alert and awear than others. You little one seems to be bright and healthy. Enjoy her.

my daughter was extremely alert right after birth until much later in the day. it was about 8 or 9 hours later that she was super tired. she was even looks like she is focusing and paying attention to the surrounds in the pictures although newborns really can only see about a foot away from themselves. she may have been following sounds though and trying to find them.

I am a mother and it sounds normal that she would be alert and awake. The test probably kept her awake. If you don't see any other signs she should be ok. Things to watch for are breathing and heart beat and if she doesn't stop crying.

I may be wrong but most of my infant books state that after a infant goes through a normal delivery, they will have a lengthy bout of alert time. After this time, they will seem to sleep for days or weeks even. Both of my childern were born via c-section and I was out of it, so I missed out on this precious time.
