A cardio (cardiovascular) exercise is anything that exercises your heart. Running, aerobics, and walking are all good examples. First, see your physician and get a clean bill of health to exercise, and then ask your physician for her/his advice on a good program for a beginner. Usually walking at least 20 minutes at least three times a week is a good start.

Cardio is exercise that gets your heart rate going...treadmill, eliptical machine, running, swimming etc...

Its function is to increase your overall aerobic capacity. In general terms the more cardio you do the better shape you'll be in.

Running or jogging for several miles straight. Doing bench pressing for instance for 3 sets of 30reps with less weight instead of 3 sets of 10reps with your usual weight that you do which is not cardio. It's function is so you don't get tired and don't run out of breath as fast.
