I used to find it hard to pass them by. I would give my last dollar -out of sympathy or maybe guilt that I had so much compared to them (and no, I'm not rich) and then I saw a couple TV documentary news shows where the reporters had anonymous interviews with a few street people. OMG many of them are running a major scam and raking in from 1,000 to 3,000 per day in the Business District eg Bay Street. They showed their ritzy apartments and suits and the Restaurants they were regulars in. Some street people use the money for drugs or booze, others change into those clothes in the daytime as a scam and change out of those clothes in the evening after traveling out of the city to their home. They say it beats working for a living so now I look at their hair and their smell and other things to determine if they are really homeless or if Hollywood is missing a Star. =))

I do sometimes, sure. I really dig into my pockets when I can see that its a war vet. That really kills me. I'm surprised by some of the responses here. People better get used to seeing these guys because we do NOT take care of them. Many will come back from this war with mental problems that keep them from holding a job, keeping a place to live etc. They fought for our country. I don't agree with the war, but the least we can do is take care of those who serve. I think being homeless is a terrible situation that none of us would ever want to be in. When we walk past these people, we should really stop and wonder what its been like to walk in their shoes.

try to always give if i can. But walking, I don't know...never had it happen. I guess if I had the money in easy access and secondly if, there are enough people around that I feel safe. Remember like all groups of society, there are those with mental issues. Unfortunately, there are larger populations within the homeless. I'm not trying to talk bad about those w/mental issues, but untreated mental illness can pose dangers. there are also bad people out there that have other intentions once they have your attention or secluded. try to have a heart but, beware of your safety as well.
Now as for all you people who say, get a job...... well would you hire someone without means of shower/bath or clean clothes. You never know what has brought these people to their knees. Just be glad it's not you and do what you can.

in simple terms because someone is on the line does no longer advise they are homeless. you don't be conscious of in the journey that they're going to use the money to purchase drugs or booze so it really is magnificent now to not. provide money to a preserve that facilitates people or furnish to purchase them a meal, yet do not in simple terms hand them money! the position I stay there have been 2 women those who wearing rags and walked everywhere begging for money. They lived in a motel and had more advantageous money than lots of the people in our community! in simple terms becasue someone looks homeless, means no longer something!

I would if I could but this disgusting country of Canada has hindered me from doing so! It's better if the homeless person is native Indian, disabled, is a certain colour, and is not heterosexual, then they can get all kinds of grants, money, and not have their computer hacked into by drug smoking crooked people above the law who go to church and have all kinds of other people harass and illegally ruin their normal heterosexual (and fundamental rights and freedoms under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms) lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They don't have to put up with people and creditors phoning them for money and the EI office phoning them for proof of disability and dates because they fit the politically correct biased criteria in this country!!!!!!!!! They do not have to worry about dirty crooked losers coming toi their door under false pretenses and other BS excuses and conditions because they fit the criteria of political correctness!

Not unless I know them personally, know they don't have a drug problem and I have change in my pocket. I know a number of the people on the street in my neighborhood are addicted to heroin because I live in the building that they sneak into to shoot up. I catch them all the time shooting up in my hallway and they are the same 'homeless' guys that stand by the subway stop and beg for money to eat. So, I usually never give strangers my money. I'm not rich enough to support their drug habit.

Honestly,I do.If I don't,I'll go home feeling like s**t.The reason that I do is because they're the same homeless people that hang around the neighborhood.I see them at the grocery store together, and they do buy food with the money they get.I know for a fact that their disability check isn't enough for the whole month.Yes,they do drink but I know that alcoholism is a mental disease and their families have disowned them. That's my opinion.

No, the more hand outs he receives from people like you the less likely he is to go out and receive money a legitimate way. The government gives homeless persons enough opportunities for assistance. If you pay your taxes then your helping the homeless enough.

Well, if he is aiming a gun at me YES. But if not I would not.It would just give him the nerve to beg more from more people and would then never try to find a job. They find it very easy to stay unemployed because of soft hearted people.
