I've recently gotten into discovering new music again. It's been nearly a decade since I last got into it... I've been using Pandora and Last FM, I've used limewire and other such P2P programs and I check out myspace for music regularly. When I have money, I go and check out local clubs or "live houses" (as they're called here). Any other ideas on how to find out about new music?
PS I'm into ALL genres.
PPS I live in Japan.

I use a combination of those mentioned. I tend to look for names at indie music sites. I check a lot of college radio websites and genre fan sites (punkradio.com etc). I then download as much as I can and listen to it.

I am also a patroller of MySpace which is GREAT to discover new bands. (LiveJournal and PureVolume are good as well)
Once I hear something I like there, I usually contact the bands and ask for other material or CD purchasing info if avail. Myspace bands are usually good at responding and Cds are generally cheap for small bands.

Happy hunting! It's my life.

Konichiwa! I love discovering new music too. I also use MySpace a lot. On MySpace, if you look at the friends of bands, usually there are other bands there, which gives you more music to listen to. Like a person above me said, Purevolume.com and LiveJournal.com are also good websites to go to for music. These are some websites where you can discover new music too...

And of course you can always use Yahoo's LAUCHcast radio to discover new music.

Try Pure Volume, Metal Injection, Blabbermouth.net, or Wikipedia.com.
