TOO OLD for a GOLDFISH??? Heavens no!

But realize, he'd like to be kept in a tank a lot better - common goldfish can grow to be 20+ inches (18" or so is more common in a tank) and fancies get 5-10". Don't believe the myth that fish will only grow to fit the size of their tank - they will end up dying from stunting and their own waste production prematurely instead (they can live decades). Please don't use a bowl!

And goldfish are major waste producers, too. A filter is a necessity, as is a larger tank they can grow into. Water changes should be done weekly (around 20-30% of the tank volume).

No, older the better. You will take better care of your goldfish than a kid. Though the bowl part I would highly recommend against. You can get a great 10 gallon tank with a fantastic bio filter for only $22 at PetSmart.

You're certainly not to old to keep fish, you're never to old for that. However what are you planning to put in your goldfish bowl? Ironically goldfish are a very poor choice. They really need much more space than they can get in a bowl. If your bowl is unheated you're going to be limited to what you can put in there. Once choice would be two or three White Cloud minnows. They can survive in a small tank and do not require heating of any kind. Another option is a paradise fish. They are from Korea and northern China and can do pretty well in cooler water, and being labyrinth fish, like gourami's and bettas, they can breath from the atmosphere so they are more tolerant of poor water conditions. Allot of people keep bettas in those sorts of bowls, but really bettas like warmer water than what you can manage in a small bowl.

Yes it is. By this age you should be able to do research on proper conditions. Goldfish need 10 gallons of filtered water for every 3" of fish.

Not a problem at all. You can keep any fish at any age.

BUT for a 20 year old adult to keep a gold fish in a bowl is wrong and irresponsible!!!

You should consider keeping it in 10 gallon tank instead.

What does age have to do with sharing an apartment with a goldfish? Remember C.J. on the TV series, "West Wing"? She kept a beloved goldfish in a bowl on her desk near the Oval Office. Goldfish are most agreeable roommates and they emotionally pull for you in all your endeavors.

No age is the approriate age to keep fish in a bowl. Bowls are cruel to keep fish in because of their small size, and the shape which makes them near impossible to heat and filter.

Goldfish also live for a long time and grow to large sizes. Keeping them in small bowls causes them to die before they have a chance to reach their full potential.

If size and budget is an issue for you, there are many cheap tanks between 2-5 gallons that are great for fish, just make sure you research the fish before you get it so you know the fish will live a full healthy life in a small tank.
