Im going to school for teaching. If you want maybe a more conveinent alternative to those learning centers, see if any teachers in your childs school tutors. They would definatly be more farmilar with course outline and how the school works, and your child might feel more comfortable...not to mention it would be much cheaper. My mom hired a math teacher that worked at my school when I had to take my math regents exams for a 2nd time my jr. year....due to a screw up by the states education, i was one of the few kids in my district (and even NY state) that passed, and got to be in the paper!!!!

teachers are always looking for extra cash, espcially w/ summer coming up, so look into it =]

I used to run a Sylvan Learning Center for some time and have worked in 3 locations throughout my career in education.

Yes, Sylvan does work, provided certain things are in place: the effort of the child, the consistency of attendance, the support of the parents and teachers, the timeliness of on-going conferences and assessments, and the accuracy of the program prescription.

It is indeed an expense (the amount varies by area), but may be worth it if you can ensure that everything mentioned above will be in place.

The testing at Sylvan is excellent if your child will actually put forth an honest effort (whether or not he/she has test anxiety). It is very well designed and can help determine if other course of action can be taken besides Sylvan's programs.

All I know about Sylvan is that they fired my husband because of one stupid parent who didn't like him. She started a rumor that she told to the manager at the Sylvan center he worked at and they were more concerned with their precious image than finding out the truth. They obviously didn't remember the many, many, many glowing reviews and thanks he had received from other parents of students he had tutored. I know this is a personal issue, but I would never recommend anyone I know to Sylvan.

My bosses nephew went a while back for a year. He is still having the same trouble. The only thing it did was cost a lot of money. I would never send my children there or recommend it for the children I have worked with.
