The pill is not the only way.
There is the female condom, just like the male condom, it's just up in the women's vagina.
There is the IUD, it's inserted into the uterus, and stays there for years, I believe up to 5 years.
There are diaphrams, foams, gels, films, all inserted into the vagina before sex.
There are shots that you can get every 3 months, Depo Provera.
Some birth control pills make your period go away, some make it shorter, some make you skip months and others just regulate your period, just depends on the type of pill.

I do the depo provera shot. you get a shot every 3 months. everybody different in how they respond to any birth control, but with me i stopped having a period after my third dose. every blue moon i may have really light spotting. i think its the best form of birth control for me. i can't remember to take those freakin pills everyday and that patch does come off in the shower!
