i love that song too, and as people have already mentioned, it's by Don Henley, and it's called Boys of Summer. i believe it was released in 1985, and it won a Grammy award. the lyric u referred to is about his disillusionment with the 60's hippy culture. the hippy culture wasn't about wealth and money, it was supposed to be about love, peace, and equality. the Grateful Dead (i believe the fans were called 'dead heads' ) were a famous band from the 60's who stood for all the values of the time. so when Don Henley once saw a Grateful Dead (deadhead) sticker on a Cadillac - a car that's always been a symbol of wealth and power, something that goes completely against the hippy culture, it disturbed him, and he realised that the innocence of the 60's was lost forever.

'out on the road today i saw a Deadhead sticker on a cadillac,
a little voice inside my head said 'don't look back, u can never look back',
i thought i knew what love was, what did i know?,
those days are gone forever, i should just let them go........'
