Metal, which is a personal opinion.
Punk isn't really a style of music, its more of an attitude and the way a band plays a certain genre of music. Most punk these days is just 'punked out' pop rock, which is why you have so many new people that like this version of punk.
Metal brought this style forward with 80's hair metal bands like Motley Crue and Skid Row, who brought a 'f*ck you'(punk) attitude to the metal genre.

Both have their bad and good sides.
If you're listening to some Iron Maiden, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Danzig, Wire, Motorhead, Minor Threat, or Job For A Cowboy, then you're going to be on top of a cloud.
However, if you're going to be listening to Green Day, Slipknot, Metallica, Sum 41, or Drowning Pool, you might as well just put knives through your ear drums.

i myself i listen to both punk and metal
i find them both very appealing
i Like Slayer,Metallica,Dio,Judas Preist,Anthrax,MayheM,Immortal,
Dark Funeral,Behemoth,ect,ect,ect
but i also Like,The Virus,The Casualties,Crass,Christian Death(goth by today`s standards/criteria)SubHumAns,MISFITS,
Toxic Narcotic,Nausea,The Ramones,ect,ect,..
punk is very energetic and angry.
not to mention the DIY factor
metal also shares its aggresivenes
and not only that it give it that edge
to kick it up a knotch or two
in the long run, metal is the bastard child of punk and it evolved into more aggresive and by all means violent forms of music
such as
grindcore
black metal
death metal
ect,ect,ect....
from a simple back beat to hellbound blast beats its going to keep changing and evolving

I think it is a symbiotic relationship. Bands like Iron Maiden, Bad Brains, Thrice and even Slayer have melded both genres together to make memorable music. They both are non conformist styles based both on musical and social behavior.
