Tom = T
Todd = t

T=3t
(T+3)=5+2*(t+3)

Substitute the first equation into the second and solve for t.
Tom(T) is 24
Todd(t) is 8

Tom = 3 Todd
and
Tom +3 = 2 Todd + 5

or
x = 3y
and
x + 3 = 2y + 5

now we can substitute , since we know what x =

3y + 3 = 2y + 5
y = 2

Todd is 2 and Tom is 6

when Tom is 9 Todd is 4

best of luck

Let Todd be x years old. Then Tom's age is 3x.

In 3 years, Tom will be (3x+3) years old. According to the condition:

3x+3=5+2x
x=2

So, Todd is 2 years old and Tom is 6 years old.

Tom's age = y
Todd's age = x

3x = y

y + 3 years = 2x + 5
3x = 2x + 5 -3
x = 2
