Demerol in small doses would help you to relax. However the usual dose of demerol would make you too sleepy to push when you need to, that is why they usually try to withhold pain medications as long as possible. Also you dont want the baby sedated at birth so this is an important thing to think about.
Whatever you and your OB decide about the medication I wish you and your new baby the very best

My friend had demerol and she didn't feel any pain, but she didn't like it. It made her really woozy and she couldn't really enjoy the birth of her son. I think everyone's experiances are different so its hard tobase on other people's opinions. I loved my epidurals both times and wouldn't do it any other way whereas my sister did a water birth and said that the warmth of the water took away alot of the pain, and the buoyancy of the water took away alot of the pressure and she swears by it.
I'd say talk to your doctor about what's right for you and find out side effects of everything so you know that what you're asking for is what is going to give you your best pregnancy.

I'd stay away from demerol and maybe go with Stadol. It was great. I used it with both of my labors, no epidurals. It doesn't totally relive pain, but it helps keep you calm. The more calm you are, the less painful the cramping is. I also used a microwaveable heat wrap, which is a special bead filled thing...you can get them at the mall or in health food areas, or the like...they nuked it and I held it on my belly.

I did, and it made you woozy, drunk like, for like 20 minutes which in my opinion made it worse because your having contractions and trying to push and it DOES NOTHING for the pain, so you go through all that feel drunk. I would opt for a shot of Demerol in the very beginning, like when your contractions are like 10-12 mins apart, but I would go for the epidural again. Some people do all that bathtub birth and alternative medicine stuff, but you gotta have a real high pain tolerance for that. Just an opinion.

Demerol will only take the edge off but not really help you with the pain.
I had a c-section but i had demerol before i was taken into surgery but it did not help with the pain.
Even after i woke up and was on a morphine pain pump that did not help the pain. Nothing helps the pain of surgery.

I am one of the minority of folks who have a bad reaction to Demerol. It makes me wild, violent, uncooperative and loopy all at the same time for that whole 6 hours it's running in my system.
Talk to your doctor about your previous experiences with medications and the possible side effects.
Demerol is high powered stuff... just be careful, hon.
Peace.

ah Demerol. I am highly allergic to that oh so wonderful narcotic. When I was administered Demerol my lips and throat swelled to 5 times the normal size.
There are painkillers that are the equivalent. When I have to have a painkiller the doctors have to substitute it with morphine.

Had demoral with first pregnancy and it didn't do anything for me, what a waste.....The epidural works a whole lot more....
As painful as labor is, the demoral was like taking tylenol..
