Yes, it happens to anyone with a non-standard appearance. Be it a hat or some foot tall blue mohawk.
Consider your hat a good filter for deciding if talking with a person is worth the breath.
You have the people who could care less what you are wearing.
Secondly the people who also favor hats. Their looks are indicative of approval or positive inclination. If you wear a cowboy hat, in an area where it isn't common, you have an easier time getting along with a complete stranger who also does the same.
Lastly there are the people who look at you and consider you a moron because of your clothing. These are filtered out by your hat and you save time since trying to be pleasant with such people, as it is a waste of it. Such people make poor friends so you are lucky to get rid of any time wasted by making them avoid you.
At least the cowboy hat is functional in that it can block the sun, on both your face and neck, while you're walking or even driving.
Just wear what you please.
The people who follow fashion trends are merely copying what rich and/or famous people do. Of course these rich and/or famous people do what they please without following anyone else.
Nice little circular loop for such sheep, eh?

save a horse- ride a cowboy, lol. Actually, I always stare because I wonder if that person actually rides horses. After the hat- I look for the wranglers, the belt buckle and the scuffed up cowboy boots. I ride english (dressage), but 90% of the male dressage riders are gay, so I look to the cowboys for guys that like horses.
Unfortunately, most real cowboys are bowlegged, missing a couple teeth, and have messed up hands from being bucked off so much, at least from all of the rodeos and penning events I have gone to.

Yes, it happens to me too, even living in a rural area with real life cowboys. Staring still happens here.
