Because you set it in advance and it isn't until the appropriate time that it can go off.

Not go off as in go bad, lol, but go off as in ready steady GO....thne you turn it off. ha ha

Go off is just a term. The meaning is to start ringing

when its on its quiet, when it goes off its like it has a problem and is yelling at you to fix it, saying "push the snooze button!!"

this is similar to when a riot sets off or goes off, all hell breaks loose. Just like an alarm clock.

I have killed many an alarm clock. they go OFF.permanently
perhaps that's where that expression comes from, when people kill the clock?

If you are asking about the phrase 'go off' I think it's b/c even though we are talking about something starting in this instance the phrase 'go off' is often used to mean moving around or starting. For example: "I'm about to go off on her", "Going off on a tangent" and "Go off on your own."

Hmmm...maybe because when you "set it" it's sort of on hold. Then, it goes off hold and starts ringing and we call that "going off."
