Final Fantasy is a series of games developed and published by Square Enix Co., Ltd. (formerly Square Co., Ltd.). It is the fourth biggest selling video game franchise of all time, having sold over 68 million units worldwide as of May 2006. The franchise includes standard console role-playing games, Tactical role-playing games, portable games, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, games for mobile phones, three anime productions, and two full length CGI films.
Unlike most game series, the separate installments of the main series bearing the "Final Fantasy" name are rarely connected in terms of plot and gameplay specifics, and thus the installments are not sequels in the strict sense. A number of the spin-off games are related to one of the games in the main series.
The first installment of the series premiered in Japan on December 18, 1987, and Final Fantasy games have subsequently been localized for markets in North America, Europe and Australia, on numerous video game consoles, IBM PC compatible computers, and several different models of mobile phones. Future installments are supposed to appear on platforms such as the Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 game systems. Two upcoming titles for the PS3 include Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
As of March 2007, there are about 28 games in the franchise, which includes Final Fantasy through Final Fantasy XII, along with a few direct sequels and numerous spin-off games. In addition to games that include the name "Final Fantasy", a number of Chocobo games include the same themes and creatures seen in the main series. The Kingdom Hearts franchise also includes a number of characters from the main series. The Final Fantasy franchise also covers other media beyond video games, such as full-length movies, anime TV shows, manga, novellas, etc.
