Thor is right. Guinea hens will run the snakes off. Moth balls and snake repellents don't work on copperheads. They work on most other snakes, but the copperheads could care less. A cat can also help.
If the snake didn't move when you're husband went after it, it must have been cold. IT was probably against the house trying to get warm. Snakes are cold blooded. They move very slow when it's cold outside.

There's not really a whole lot you can do to keep snakes out. Odds are, you live close to a water source since you had a moccasin. Just be sure not to leave anything lying around that would make a good hiding place for a snake. Also, no rock beds and garden ponds. Prime snake habitat!! Make sure you also don't have anything around like dog food or bird seed in your garage or out buildings. They are prime for mice and rats. That may be why he was there, good food source!! Or, he was just sunning himself when, well, we won't go into that. Just that I'm sure you could have called someone instead of killing it.

If you have snakes- then you ALSO must have something they like to eat. Mice & rats are among their favorite food. -Get rid of THEM- & the snakes will go elsewhere (Vermin are particularly fond of garbage- you don't have open garbage cans lying around- do you?). Personally- I'd be a LOT more concerned about having rats around- than snakes!!!

Not much you can do to keep snakes out of your yard, but every few months I toss several boxes of moth balls under my house to keep them from going there. Actually, they don't seem to get very close to my house now, and I guess it's the moth balls keeping them away, too. Keeping the ground around your outside faucets dry helps, because snakes are drawn to moisture on hotter days.

bury moth balls in the ground 1-2 inches deep around the perimeter of your yard and space them about 1 ft apart. snakes will not cross over this line. if you have pets that like to dig then this isnt a good idea for you. mothballs are harmful to pets.
