look up tinnitis - ringing in your ears. I also get this, it is a very opaque noise and can be overwhelming but always goes away. Make sure you're not listening to concerts, ipods, etc too loudly.

It is definitely an internal cause. Your ear is made up of a membrane that reacts to vibrations of the air. Surrounding this membrane is a thin muscle tissue. If you've ever been to a party or similar with really loud music for an extended period of time, you may notice after leaving that everything sounds dulled and quiet. This is because those ear muscles reacted to the loud music by tensing.
A ringing in your ear is caused by a similar effect, possibly due to random spasms of the muscle or something along those lines.

Frequently, it's microwave that is increasingly polluting our world. Oftentimes, harmonic/resonance interference waves occur between the electromagentic emissions from numerous electronics around you that blend and create audible effects. I have noticed an increase in these sounds around wireless routers for computers, as one possible source.

You are most likely listening to sounds which don't exist in physical reality but are perceived because of damage to the nerves in the cochlea of your inner ear. This phenomenon is called tinnitus. It will likely get worse as you age.

It's something that can happen to you when you begin to have some hearing loss that's more prominent in one ear than the other.

Ringing in your ears? It's internal, not external.
