why Aragorn (or one of his ancestors) didnt try to reclaim the throne of Gondor before? Why was Aragorn's true identity shrouded in secrecy? I tried googling the answer but didn't find anything. Brief (basic) explanations appreciated, thanks!

Aragorn's line knew exactly who their ancestors were, and everyone knew that Isildur had children.

After Isildur's death, the north kingdom (Arnor) lasted for almost 2000 years, and there was no secret that it was ruled by the descendants of Valandil, Isildur's youngest son.

Arvedui, the last king of Arnor had tried to claim the throne of Gondor when the king of Gondor was killed, but Gondor rejected the claim. Once the kingdom or Arnor was split up, the line of the kings continued as chieftains, and there's no way that they would have been accepted as king in Gondor. When all the remnants of the north kingdom collapsed, the Dunedain of the north went into hiding, and would have had even less ability to claim Gondor's throne. They hid their identities then because Sauron, who was starting to rise again, would have definitely tried to kill them.

It took a confluence of events (defeat of Sauron, tremendous success in battle, the imminent passing away of the Elves and the end of the age) to bring about the restoration of the thrones of both Arnor & Gondor in Aragorn.

Read the appendices at the end of "Return of the King". They give abbreviated histories of Arnor & Gondor, as well as a history of the 2nd & 3rd ages.

Well I think since Isildur 'failed' to throw the ring into Mount Doom. His descendents would have had to live with the guilt and shame. Aragorn himself was very much a loner as though he didn't want anyone to know his true identity. That, and the fact that he'd fallen in love with an elf would have been reason not to become a king. He'd be expected to marry a human. And for many generations, his line was not in Gondor. I'd understand why he couldn't just waltz in there and expect everyone to kneel at his feet. He had to earn his right to return to his throne. The task of destroying the ring thus becomes the foil for him to prove his valor and leadership qualities.

Well, first of all, after Isildur died, everyone thought he was childless, and whoever his children were probably didn't know who their father was...
And the reason Aragorn's identity was kept secret was because times were dangerous and if anyone found out, they would try to kill him. Especially the dark overlord.

I can't remember if this is actually from the books themselves, or from some other source, but I've heard that none of the ancestors felt worthy or capable of being king, so they contented themselves as being rangers.

There were forces that wished him to die, which is why he lived with the elves
