How can you tell if your starter is gone on a car. I mean what are the signs you can tell without having it tested? Thanks for any help!

Without testing? Ok, if it doesn't work, is noisy or slow, its no good.

Soleniod clicks, but does not engage bendix for motor. Overheated as in under header installation (Typical Chev. big block problem.) Motor turns, but gear fails to engage flywheel, smells burnt after attempted start. Dead spots in motor ( usually found after many attempts to start vehicle.) Using almost all the battery to start car. (Power eater). It's usually in your interest to take it off, and have it tested. Most auto supply stores will do it for free. Good luck!
