Illustration is giving an elaborate explanation and giving clarifications. It is normally done with explaining steps (maths), giving pictures (magazines, science, journals, etc.) or showing models (simulations, dummies, etc.).

Example is one of a number of things, or a part of something, taken to show the character of the whole; an item of information that is representative of a type. Some sentences for example: This painting is an example of his early work; All need to set a good example by arriving on time.
