People who victimize defenseless individuals such as senior citizens and children deserve 10 years to life depending on the case , in certain cases like rape-they deserve the death penalty.
I don't buy this whole re-education excuse for criminals. They are cowards who broke the law and went after the ones whom couldn't defend themselves, therefor it is our civic duty as a society to defend them to the full extent of the law. If you assault a police officer or a member of office, you are looking at serious time. Well how about if we imply the same standards for senior citizens and children. If we send the message out, the number of victimized senior citizens and children would drastically reduce. There is no excuse, if you fu** with those that can't defend themselves, the law will fu** you over150%.

Why limit the age to those above 70? Surely, a person can physically abuse somebody who is 69 years old just as easily. What about people in hospitals? Why not protect people in comas from becoming punching bags or worse?
Why not address the psychological abuse while we are at it?
Clearly, this law is needed, but it does only half of what it should.

Only 4 years. Maybe the minimum should be 10 plus hard labor.

Prison simply does not work. Prison takes people who, in many cases, simply made a stupid youthful mistake (not always, some things truly are heinous) and puts them in a situation to be violated, abused, threatened and mistreated. People need to be re-educated. While the statistics on re-education in lieu of prison are not as high as they should be, alot of people come out of prison worse off than they went in. And then they're back in society.
People who abuse our elders or take advantage of their limitations of weaknesses are horribly disturbed and indicative of something amiss in society. They should be punished. But re-educated. Peep the stats on violent crimes by repeat offenders across the board. Pretty staggering. Prison doesn't work. It's simply easier.

Seniors must be protected by law. Thus, the new law increasing the penalty for abusing seniors is a valid exercise of the police power of the state.

but what if the perp is also above age 70? what happens then? have you heard anything on that? and what kind of crimes? would it be similar to hate crime laws?
edit: to nutra. when was the prison system about re-education, therapy or healing the sickness ever? you must have missed the memo. sure, it needs reform but it's big business and is controlled by the biggest gang we have in the USA ... the law.

I agree. I would suggest more than four. People who abuse others would suggest less.
I think they should be shot, like the scum that they are.
