I thought that my current power supply (which burned out) was 450, but after buying the new one found out it was 420. Will it hurt the rest of my computer to run it on a higher wattage?

I upgraded from a 600W to a 1000W power supply.
I don't see how it would hurt in any way.

No it wont hurt anything. Wondering why replace it with a 450 watts, since ur replacing it anyway,,why not a 600-800 watts, think ahead . U can always take back the 450 watts and buy urself a higher wattage

No it will not harm your computer and most all computer enthusiast will tell you the more watts in a power supply the better. As Martha Stuart would say, the 450, is a good thing.

Edit update: WARNING WARNING if you own a Dell you can not go out and buy a store bought power supply. Dell reverses the wiring on the supply and mother board so you will buy only their power supply. This is very sneaky of Dell and they have excused this practice for years.

Your computer 'Draws or Pulls ' only the Power that it needs for what ever operation that it is doing. The extra available power will not harm your computer. In fact, it may even run smother.

No, you'll be fine. The watts, in simple terms, simply refers to the amount of power it's pulling into the computer. Higher wattage power supplies are often used if you have alot of internal hardware that requires additional power or extra drives / peripherals. You will have that power available with your new power supply, but probably won't use it all.

It wont run at a higher wattage. It will have more available watts. No it wont harm/hurt anything you could put a 1000Watt PSU in there it will be fine.

No because your Mobo will still only use what it needs...the rest is in reserve.
Those that have high-end Videocard and Mobos use up to 1000 watt powersupplys..
