They want to create an impression that they are 'knowlegeable' of everything, and that nothing scapes from their nosey radar.
Most attention-getter I know of, have emotional insecurities due to their low life stata or low educational attainment.
Just be thankful because you are not like them. Cheers!

well, I wish I could provide you with a shorter answer, but there are actually many variable reasons for this, all based on the individual, so I will list what I know.
There is the opportunist - the person who spreads gossip simply to take another person down to move themselves up. Sometimes there is even financial activity based behind this (as we often see in the large media corporations), and sometimes it's simply because those people have never learned to accept themselves and instead tear down others.
There is the instigator - sometimes people do this for a personal warped vendetta against another person that is only justifiable in their own mind and generally boils down to jealousy/envy.
There is the moralist - often times, strangely enough, if a person is hiding something from another, and tells another person that secret and tells them not to tell anyone, the person does simply because they want to convey that secrets are not a good thing, and eventually hurt someone, and this action proves the point fairly quickly being that the blunt truth is exposed.
There is the mentally inferior - These are the lower register sheep of the herd who generally follow the pattern behavior of the "alpha-gossiper", and simply join in gossiping randomly without cause simply because it's the environment they are surrounded by. I'd have to say this is generally the people who talk smack about others at gradeschool, and grow up to be extremely drug addicted miserable people, and can't seem to understand why.

Gossip is a human universal; you do not have to be obnoxious to spread it.

People with low self esteem issues often mistakenly try to solve these issues by speaking poorly about others. It gives them a temporary sense of superiority at a moment in their lives when they feel most inferior.
