I think he's good at heart, But when he does stuff to help others out, I think he acts like he's not proud of it, because it's not the pirate thing to do, to help others out. Pirates are selfish and every man for himself. Jack I think is kind of stuck in between. He wanted to leave his ship and watch his crew fight the giant squid and die to save himsef but he couldn't.

I think Sparrow starts out primarily concerned about himself. As the series goes on, however, this begins to change. He actually takes a liking to Will and the crew, and this begins to effect the way he acts.

You can really see it in the end when he faces down the squid. It's like he hits a point where he decides "If everyone expects me to be a hero, fine, I'll be one."

It will be interesting to see what happens in the end.
