Hooking laptop up to internet?

I have a Compaq Presario 1200. I live at boarding school, and there is an outlet to plug into the internet. Can I just plug it in with a cable? Where can I get a cable?

Yes, if the port is active. You can get an ethernet cable at any electronics store. (assuming it's an ethernet jack).
