Last year Freddie Sanchez of the Pittsburgh Pirates hit 53 doubles and struck out 52 times. It is highly unlikely anyone recently has had more doubles than strikeouts, but who knows? Anyone know offhand if this has been done before, or if it is even very rare? (Only players who had enough official at-bats to qualify for the batting title should be considered.)

Okay, I just checked. It is not that rare among batters who do not strike out much. For example, Tony Gwynn pulled off the feat many times. Guys like Wade Boggs, George Brett, and Pete Rose did it a number of times as well. Bottom line is guys who do not strike out much have a good chance of hitting more doubles than striking out.
