Last year Freddie Sanchez of the Pittsburgh Pirates hit 53 doubles and struck out 52 times. It is highly unlikely anyone recently has had more doubles than strikeouts, but who knows? Anyone know offhand if this has been done before, or if it is even very rare? (Only players who had enough official at-bats to qualify for the batting title should be considered.)

Okay, I just checked. It is not that rare among batters who do not strike out much. For example, Tony Gwynn pulled off the feat many times. Guys like Wade Boggs, George Brett, and Pete Rose did it a number of times as well. Bottom line is guys who do not strike out much have a good chance of hitting more doubles than striking out.

Yes it's rare for most. However it's been done many times . The list of all of them would take too long to research, but to show my point Tony Gwynn did it in 1987, then every year from 1990 to 2001 (actually in 2001 he had 9 of each). That's 13 times, including 12 in a row.

YEAR 2b SO
2001 9 9
2000 12 4
1999 27 14
1998 35 18
1997 49 28
1996 27 17
1995 33 15
1994 35 19
1993 41 15
1992 27 16
1991 27 17
1990 29 23
1987 36 35

A couple of names come to mind. Don Mattingly did it 5 times between 1984 and 1989

1984-44 double, 33 strikeouts
1985 -48, 41
1986-53, 35
1988-37, 29
1989-37, 30

In 1987, the only year in that time he didn't have more doubles than strikeouts, he had 38 doubles 38 strikeouts. GREAT player before the back went.

Also Wade Boggs did it 4 times

1983-44,36
1986-47,44
1988-45,34
1991-42, 32

In 1989, Boggs had 51 doubles 51 strikeouts.
