Check out Grimm's Fairy Tales. Not the Disney version but the originals. You might find something there.

I actually did something similar to what you did, but in a lesson plan. There are many different versions to fairy tales. I did this for 1st graders, and used the books.
"Cinderella" the classic story, not Disney, "Dinorella" by Pamela Duncan Edwards, which is a dinosaur version of the story, and "Cendrillon" by Robert D. San Souci .
For your paper, you could pick from many different versions of Cinderella, and identify the differences in the stories that relate to the cultural differences of where they story takes place. The amazon link is for a search for cinderella, which includes different versions of the story.

For what grade level? What about doing books about homelessness? You could contrast homelessness in North America (I like the picture book "Fly Away Home", but there are many others out there), and homelessness in another country. There are lots of them out there. I just read a book called "The Garbage King". It was excellent, but is for around grade 7 or 8 +. It's about two homeless boys living on the streets in Ethiopia. Any issue would work: prejudice, war, family, friendship, etc. Good luck.

I'm concerned that you are getting "theme" confused with "topic". Theme is the underlying lesson or idea in the book. Topic is what the book is actually about and what happens in the book. If your assignment is to look at two books with the same THEME, you could choose two books about friendship or family. I'm sorry that I can't offer any suggestions, but I do hope you clarify the assignment with your teacher.

I have a suggestion - compare and contrast cultural fables. They are amazingly similar regardless of cultural origin but they have subtle yet distinct cultural influences and differences ie. animals involved, status/occupation of protagonists....
