I big hug and smile and a "GRANDMA!" from the little ones is all I want. I love it when they want to come and spend the night with grandma and grandpa. Their actions show me all the thanks and gratitude that I need. As a grandparent I don't expect thanks, just respect.

I love getting notes and emails from our grandchildren. They let us know how
things are going, when their next game is. One granddaughter is 19 and in
university. She has emailed us to let us know how school is going, how she feels about the way things are going. I have been able to give her advice and she has followed it. I found out it was the same advice our son and daughter in law gave. I shared what I went through in school and how I handled it. I wanted her to know that she is a champion and always will be in our eyes. I encourage her & she gives me feedback. We don't get to see each other much but we have a standing date for lunch whenever she gets free time at
school. We catch up and just laugh and have fun. When they were little we
would sometimes surprise them with a small gift. We only give gifts for their
birthday and Christmas. She was so excited she clutched it to herself and ran
next door to tell her friend that Grandma gave her something--and it wasn't
her birthday. You know, you can't buy the love and friendship you have with
your grandchildren. We have a lot of fun together and they know it's alright to
tease us or play practical jokes. {Where do you think they learned that from?}

I don't know if you really understand what a tough question you have asked. As a grandpa I can tell you that it is really difficult to sit on the sidelines and hope your kids and grandkids have time for you. Mine don't. I was always too busy for them, and now they are too busy for me. Like the Harry Chapin song says: "My boy has become just like me." So, when they are able to fit me in their schedule I make the most of it.
I am thrilled when one of them gives me a hug, or sends me a card. or calls on the phone. Heck, I even get happy when they e-mail me, especially if they send pictures.
If you really want to know what makes your grandparents happy is go see them when you can. And don't ever let them feel that you are only dropping by out of a sense of obligation. That's the worse. And do things that make them proud of you. You wouldn't believe how easy it is to make a grandparent proud. And talk to them, not down to them. Do not be patronizing. We have lived long lives and learned far more than you have in your few years. Ask questions. Honest and sincere questions about their lives.
Finally, the very fact that you have posed such a question indicates your desire to please and be a part of your grandparents lives. How lucky they are to have a grandchild like you. God bless.

I have no grandchildren. I don't know how to answer.
I think an old person needs love and care from their grandchildren greetings. Besides, he also needs to know his grandchildren's actual situations in their society, school etc so that he can proud of their grandchildren to his friends.

I think it is important to just let them know that you appreciate what they do for you. If they gave you a book, let them know you appreciate them thinking of you. Grandparents just want to know they are loved and important in the lives of their grandchildren. Any little thing that keeps them in your heart and you in theirs is what matters.

I certainly would want to know if the kiddo really like the stuff I sent him...for example, if I sent JJ a sports jersey, I'd be a little disappointed if all he could say is ---
"Thanks, Granny...you're the best..Love, JJ"
I'd be thrilled with something like this ---
"Granny dear, u r really cool. tnx. the jersey is neato...big but mom sez I'll grow into it... wearing to sch Mon. BTW, got B+ in Sci test last week...cool huh? tnx 4 remembring my bday...13 is sooooooo cool. I'll visit u summer, ok? make me applepie. tnx & luv, xxxx, JJ"

That is simple, when could you spend time with them. Watch them play soccer, baseball, hockey etc.. Just being there showing you are interested in what they like to do and behind them is very rewarding to both, just do not overdue it. Do not make them spend time with you, spend quality time with them or watching them.
