Hi Crystal Glow,

I figured I'd answer you on the board rather than through a private message since space isn't limited here. (And I get 2 points for my trouble.)

A lot of information about working in the dance industry can be found at Answers4Dancers
http://www.answers4dancers.com/
You should read everything in the non-members sections and hold off on paying for a membership for now. Note the article on "1000 Atlanta Dancers Show Up For Beyonce's Audition"
http://www.answers4dancers.com/nonmembers/beyonce.asp
And that was just how many dancers showed up at ONE of the audition tour sites for 40 open slots. Be sure to scroll down to read "Alert! Beyonce's Choreographer Low-Balls Dancers" about how Frank Gaston is screwing dancers on their pay.

Since you're still in high school, you should definitely be subscribing to "Dance Spirit" magazine to read articles about making it in the dance biz. Real briefly, to answer your questions: Yes, back up dancers in the music BUSINESS get paid, that's why it's a business. (Dancers who dance for free are doing it as a hobby.) Yes, it's outrageously hard to get the job. First, though, you really should get a dance agent (after you graduate high school and move to L.A.), which in itself is very hard to do.

Dancers for some of the biggest names in the music business can earn around $3,000 for a total of 4 days work. But before you get excited about that, those same dancers (the very best ones on the "A" list) can average less than ONE WEEK OF WORK IN A 3-MONTH PERIOD. This means that ALL DANCERS must have a means of supporting themselves between gigs.

Hey, Crysal Glow

I don't know much about hip-hop and how does stuff work with videos. I'm guessing - if you are really good - you get paid for it, if you are only kind of good you do it for free. That's how it is with ballroom. If you're looking to be paid for it I guess you'll have to find them and audition for them.

You can always start teaching once you learned enough to teach. Teaching is fun.
