Okay, so if I hook my internet modem, a card reader, anything USB (matters not if in front or back of comp) and i play my media player, it plays with static, speeds the song, and skips parts. I have a HP that is relatively old, got it in 2002. But it didn't use to do this. I had more memory installed, and every since, it has been playing music with static. I have to unhook the usb device and restart the computer for the static to stop. I've tried volume controls and all I could think of. If anyone has an idea - I would appreciate it!

you have an open ground in one of your connections... probably a bus or usb cable. cure it by making a common ground between all your components. get a wire with an alligator clip on each end and clip it to grounded metal parts of each component.. when you eliminate the static, you have found the bad connection.
