let them soak in a degreaser/cleanser called Mean Green from dollar general (about 3 bucks per spray bottle costwise)

scrub them with a scrub sponge, rinse and let them air dry on a cloth (preferrably an old clean bathroom towel you do not use anymore) for 24 hours or untill dry before reconnecting them

this should take care of the problem and is a cheap and good way to clean them that I have found

do not immerse them in water! you can scrub them with a scrub sponge and household cleaner, then wipe with a damp towel to rinse. the inside of the element is filled with a porous ceramic material, then plugged with silicone plugs. these plugs can expand out and if they do, that will allow water to penetrate and that will cause them to burn out. very expensive to replace them all!! best bet, have the hubby learn how to clean them, then show him how to use the dial, high, medium, low, when he turns the knobs!! lol, i think it's just a right brain/ left brain thing!! either get a little t v and put it in the kitchen so that he can watch sports center while cooking, or ban him from cooking indoors, just on the grille! good luck, hope this helps.
