I like your thinking.
I'm on a 4 day week end at the moment.
The 8-hour day movement or 40-hour week movement (a.k.a. the Short-time movement) had its origins in the Industrial Revolution in Britain, where industrial production in large factories transformed working life and imposed long hours and poor working conditions. With working conditions unregulated, the health, welfare and morale of working people suffered. The exploitation of child labour was common. The working day could range from 10 hours up to 16 hours for six days a week.
Being a basically Christian society there was no work on the Sabbath.
8 hours on, 8 hours off, 8 hours sleep.

In 1985, to save energy on Administrative Reforms Commission's recommendation, late Prime Minister of India Mr. Rajiv Gandhi introduced 5-days' week in government offices in India. Who knows the present PM Mr. Man Mohan Singh may introduce a 3-days' week.

Depends on the job, I used to work 4 12 hour days. But most office related jobs run 5 days.

This sounds like a good idea, but if you need a plumber there would then be a 3/7 chance you'd be paying weekend charges.

That was one of the victories of the unions. Prior to the unions, the work week was six to seven days.
