Believe me it can be done and you can see Cairo ,the Citadel the Museum, as well as The Giza Plateau, thePyramids,Sphinx the Giza Museum and even have a camel ride at the best price.
As well you can get to Old Cairo,Islamic Cairo have a felluca ride and then go mad shopping at Khan el Khalili one evening. Its magic by night. You can take the overnight sleeping train to Luxor and see Karnak,Luxor Temple and market. Cross the Nile to the West Bank and visit The Valley of the Kings Deir el Barhi, and the amazing Ramasseum.
Then the train back to Cairo.
All in 6 days!
But you need to be really organized beforehand and have an excellent, reliable guide on hand, all the way.
The best advise I can give you is, to invest in a copy of The Lonely Planet's Guide to Egypt.
This amazing book has everything you could wish or need to know about experiencing Egypt,in the best way.Time, money and "the experience" accounted for!
It has prices for everything, including taxi ride's and what to expect to pay for various purchases. All entrance fees and open/close times for all historic sites and places of interest are included.
Best of all it has a list of recommended hotels etc .
A good rule is, to use it for everything when you go to Egypt.Keep it on you at all times.
I still use it as a quick referance after 4 plus years.
If it isn't in the Lonely Planet guide,DON'T use the service,DON'T stay at that hotel and DON'T go on that tour.
There are suggested 2,4,6 day tours for you to do on you own.You can follow one or mix them up to suit.
The reality is, the normal tours are fun and a good way to join in with a bunch of other people to see a bit of Egypt.
But you will be wisked here and there so fast, with no chance to really see anything in depth.
Plus a lot of the guides have only a very basic knowledge of the sites that they read off a preset information sheet.
Ask a question that is a bit different, and you will get a polite smile and a quick change in direction.
The L.P.G. to Egypt, has very informative accurate section on Egypt's history,Dynastic Egypt with loads of details, and a really impressive description of the tombs in The Valley of The Kings.
All written by experienced Egyptologists.
Plus details,of how to get there etc.for all the sites and temples you could wish to go to in Egypt.
So see the Egypt you wish to see, and know the information you have to help you plan your trip, is up to date and accurate.
It's also information gathered from travelers not paid for adverts by guides, accomadation places and tour operators.
You can't buy your way into being recommended by The Lonely Planet Guides.
Its cost is a very small investment for a way to have the trip you will remember always.
I recommend it even for those who are going on organized tours.

Only six days??? Depends how you want to do this. It can take more than two days just to do the pyramids (and check out the sun boat, tucked behind one of the pyramids) Rent a camel or a horse and spend some time in the general area of the pyramids. The Cairo museum can take more than a week to see depending on your tastes and dedication. Take a trip up the Nile. Definitely visit the citadel, the Khan El Khalil, the necropolis where there is a mosque with the largest decorated wooden dome in the world. Visit the mosques in Cairo. There is amazing Islamic architecture spread throughout the city. The Khan El Khalil is not only what you see at street level but extends upwards. Try and get to the first floor. That's where the action is. That's where they hand make all the stuff you see. it will make appreciate better the stuff you might buy. ( I'm head of diving operations in an archaeological underwater dig in the ancient port of Alexandra and have been going to Egypt twice a year for 40 days each time since 1999 and so far I have just scratched the surface of what there is to do and see in Cairo.) By the way there is a theme park in Heliopolis(close to Cairo) of life in ancient Egypt.

The best thing to do is to get a tour guide to maximize what u can do in Egypt while u are there. There are of course certain places that u've to go to while u are there, as I'm sure other people mentioned, for example, the pyramids, the sphinx, etc. I would say try an evening nile cruise, go to a mall to get a feeling of the Egyptian people, try to eat some egyptian food if ur stomach would tolerate it, go to the Egyptian tower specially at night (it overlooks Cairo, amazing). If you want, u can go to one of the resorts either by the Mediterranean sea or the red sea. The beaches in Egypt are beautiful, even in the winter.

You may go to Alexandria(about 250 km away from Cairo), it's a beautiful city founded by Alexander the great, you may find there lots of old roman structures. And its right next to the Mediterinian sea, you'll love it!
P.S: It is the second best city in Egypt.

the pyramids and sphinx, and don't miss the light and sound show it's great, then you have the museum, you can't miss that, the pharaonic village, the citadel, the khan el khalili (oldest market in the world), the old mosques and churches, beautiful, then you can take a night cruise on a boat, have dinner and watch some belly dancing, there's the step pyramid which you should go and see too at saqqara, at night plenty of hotels where you can have a nice meal watch a show, dance, listen to oriental music, have drinks at bars, karaoke, there's the opera too, malls try city stars mall, one of the largest...have fun :)
