Like is a thing you put in your backyard and like is either gas or u could just walk with it on the back (thats the one i want,the one that u handle it from the back) well yeah u walk it on ur backyard and it takes off all the dirt so that u can put grass in there and it grows. what is it called

Hi, it is call a tiller or roto-tiller. Rent one or buy a used one because new ones are very expensive. A gas engine will last longer. There are electrical ones with mixed reviews. Good luck on your project.

If you plan on using a tiller, call Miss Utility, it's the law.
Likely you'd want to use a rear tine tiller, but to plant grass you can also simply core aerate it, with a Core Aerator. Since an aerator doesn't go as deep, there's no reason to call to have your utility lines marked, and it's a lot faster going, but the choice is yours.

A sodbuster takes off a layer of grass and leaves you with straight dirt.
A dethatcher removes dead grass from you lawn to make room for new grass seed.
