Just to make things clear, COBOL is a programming language. You write programs in it, which you then translate to machine code with a compiler. Yes, you can obtain .exe files! But if you don't already know how to program, COBOL may be a bad language to start with. It's used only in very specialized environments AFAIK, and it has a reputation for being overly verbose.

On the other hand, there are compilers and tutorials (freely) available on the Web, and quite the community. Better see for yourself.

Ha! Well I not heard this in a long time. Cobol is the long standing classic. I learned Flow Charts (Still argue with people about that with C, C++, Perl etc.), Assembly Language, Basic and then Cobol (Fortran came next). I wish I could help you, but, it been a long time. Just thought it interesting you learn this. It still used very much today, though many not know. I really encourage you on this, I may look back over some of my old books now that you mentioned it.

Sure

Google "windows cobol compiler" without the quotes

It is an old, but very much alive language.

Not really, cobol is a pretty worthless language, most everything is written in c and c++ now days.
