I am doing a science project on wether or not blind people can actually hear better, or just depend on their sence of hearing more so they pay more attention to sound, therefore giving the illusion that they can hear better. Does anyone know?

Actually, they can in many cases hear better. Some of the neurons involved in sight may get converted to other uses such as hearing. The brain is not as static as is believed.

it's not necessarily that they can hear better, it's that they pay more attention. also, answerer number two is correct, cells do not go unused, and when no repairs are needed to an area, the energy saved in that maintenence will be used elsewhere

for example someone with sight may not pay attention too closely, to the sound of a bunch of pennies dropping on the ground, but someone that is blind will know pretty much the spot that the pennies fell, if they are close enough, and will know the twang of the copper as it hits the ground, if it's tile, concrete, etc.. myself, my sight is fine, but i can tell the sound of a usa penny vs a canadian penny, because i pay attention

also, they are more dependant on hearing and touch, so they have no choice BUT to pay more attention to them. and it's not just hearing, feel is just as important. you can tell, if you pay enough attention, an approximate weight (and therefore, a possible size) of a person walking a few feet behind you

Is not that they can necessarily hear better is just their hearing senses become more accurate. It works this way; when one of your sense lack potential the rest become stronger in order to make up for the other one. Therefore the gain of strong sense of sound makes up for the lost of sight.

No, they cannot hear better but it is just that they pay attention to sound as that is the only thing they can depend on to know about their suroundings as they do not have their eyes sight to help them.

I hope this helps. ;)

blind people are not necisarily born with better hearing
they need to be aware of their surroundings by listening closly because they donot have their eyes to see.

they need to remember sounds instead of sights.

Oh yes in most cases this is true.
This may be because they are concentrating only on sounds and nothing else.
